Single Mums weekend – Day 2

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

December 20th 2009

MORNING: Up bright and early at 5:00AM, made myself a coffee and settled down in my favourite chair to check my email – poop! – we are down to crawl speed due to our “Fair Access Policy Threshold” being exceeded for the broadband quota provided by Hughes Net. Out in the boonies you do not get much for your $300/month, just 500MB/day and if exceeded you have to wait a full 24 hours before broadband service is restored! So who is the culprit? Well, it is a tossup between our crew loading tons of pictures on Facebook or the shuffleboard champ playing games on the computer – my guess is that it is a combination of both :0).

5:40AM and Chef Kim has arrived to prepare Mums/Kids (MK’s) breakfast, he sure is a hard working reliable guy! I take this as my cue to commence the brownie point mission of making a cup of tea and taking it to Nan in bed; we had set the alarm for 6:00AM since a goodly number of MK’s told Jaranya last night that they would be turning up for the Ruesri Dat Ton session, a Thai self stretching exercise, scheduled for 7:00AM this morning.

Single Mums weekend at EVR

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

We donated two nights at EVR to single Mums who are less fortunate than most of us; I’ll blog our experience starting with today.

MORNING: Nine single mums with their eleven children arrived before noon today, as well as the three social workers that helped with the transportation of the mum’s /children to EVR and, on Monday, back home again. Flint did a fine job of explaining the facilities, meal times and various things that they could all do during the time they will be with us, so far everything is going smoothly – even the plumbing and electrical problem is resolved so onward and forward to collecting eggs and visiting with the animals and birds on the ranch.

Koda has yet to decide whether  he likes the situation ;)

AFTERNOON: After lunch all the mum’s and kids dispersed back to their rooms with the kids playing with the dogs along the way, once again the border collies are a big hit and already becoming celebrities. It was not long before the mum’s set back out again with many of them heading for the pool with their kids. Oh what a delight it was to see how much they all enjoyed the pool, it is right now getting more use in a day than it would in a whole month during the summer. We learnt something too, there is such a thing as a floater preventer, they are waterproof diapers with elastic around the legs and top, which, short of a case of chronic flatulence, will keep all of the discharged brownies out of the pool – awesome! :0)
