Cattle roundup

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Cattle roundup this year was like no other! The 22,000 hectare Kelly Lake fire was a serious threat to the open range used by ourselves and other ranchers  so as a precaution all of the interconnecting range gates were opened in order to help prevent the cattle from becoming trapped; this was an excellent move especially since the fire did encroach upon many hectares of the range.

One of the less positive outcomes of this action was that, as expected, the cattle herds became mixed up with each other. Not a big problem though in as far that all of the cattle carry the brand of the ranch they belong to and so far most of the cattle have been accounted for. Some are still missing, for example Echo Valley Ranch is missing four of its steers.

One of the corrals used for sorting which cattle belonged to which ranch was at the OK Ranch and appropriately called “The OK Corral” – lots of cows, as can be seen in the following images, but no sign of Wyatt Earp.
