Flying Falcons to the lure

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Falconer Brian Davies has been working with Echo Valley Ranch for over 14 years and one of the things he does is raise Gyr and Peregrine falcons. Brian is a falconer from way back and we will be writing more about him in later blogs; Frank L. Beebe, who is very well known in the falconry world and had a book published “The Compleat Falconer”, rates Brian amongst the top best natural falconers in the world – coming from Frank, that means a lot.

We will be blogging the raising of Gyr falcons at Echo Valley Ranch, from the time the falcon makes its nest in our falcon mews through to having young falcons ready for delivery to other falconer’s  who will use them to hunt.

We will also be posting some pictures of Brian flying the falcons to the lure, which our guests love to watch; Brian releases and flies falcons to the lure every day at the ranch at 1:30PM.

We do have a short video showing Brian flying the falcons www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAiiv40n1xU

The two pictures that come with this blog show what needs to be done when, on very rare occasions, the lure is not moved away from the diving falcon in time to avoid a strike. The pictures show the strike which is immediately (more…)

Nature’s harsh realities

January 10th 2010

Today I drove Glen and Jim down to the canyon to show Jim, our guest, how dramatically the landscape changes and hopefully have the opportunity to see some wildlife. What followed after that relates to the title of this blog and before describing what we saw and experienced I offer my thoughts concerning “Nature’s harsh realities.”

January 1st 2010 –> January 2nd 2010

There is never a dull moment when you have cattle on your ranch!

No sooner had we delivered two cows and twenty Black Angus calves to Echo Valley Ranch the “fun” started when seven of the smaller calves managed to squeeze under the fence by the watering trough, through a gate that had been left open by Brian, and started their wandering around looking for their cow mum.

December 28th

It is clear to see that Nan and I love animals, we are surrounded by them and this includes ten border collies, two cats and of course cows, horses etc. It follows that our guest ranch is therefore “Pet Friendly”, meaning that our guests can bring their well behaved pets with them. The only request we make is that they must stay in a cabin, be sure to let their pet out as required to pee and poop, to ensure their pet does not damage anything inside the cabin and last, but not least, to keep their pets off of the furniture – including the bed.

New Year's Eve

December 31st 2009

It was a glorious day today, a balmy -5C and beautiful hoar frost coating the trees and everything else outside, all highlighted by the sun. All of the outdoor activities were taking place, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, and just plain walking around and taking it all in. I drove two of our guests down to the canyon and all in all everything was super.

The food is always a big hit and our New Year’s dinner was no exception. I have included some pictures but for the midnight shots I was too busy popping the champagne bottles to take pictures.
