Christmas at Echo Valley Ranch & Spa

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

December 25th 2009

What I like most about being at Echo Valley Ranch, at Christmas time, is the same as for the rest of the year, and that is it is peaceful here and in harmony with nature. When asked what it is I like best about EVR my response used to be “leaning on the fence”; but that did not impress anybody so in addition to that I point out that there are many activities to participate in, that the food is first class and that we have a world class spa.

The nice thing about Christmas is that it is conducive for tuning in with your spiritual self; it is a special time of the year when, if we let it in, we will sense the “spirit of Christmas”. Being at Echo Valley Ranch is a very special place, no matter what your religious beliefs may be you become aware that we are part of something very beautiful, we are a part of nature and it is easier to love all that is around us.

Fixing leaks in the morning, a trip down the canyon in the afternoon….

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The fluctuations in temperature this December have been quite extreme, for example, last week temperatures  went down to -31C, it held there for a couple of days then zoomed up to +2C. We liked the increase in temperature, especially as it is forecast to stay in the balmy +2C range for at least the next seven days, but this time what came with it was evidence of two ruptured pipes!

I got up early yesterday, real early, and was settled down in my favourite chair before 6:00AM catching up on some reading when I heard water dripping (pouring!) onto the floor some place in the lodge. The place turned out to be the kitchen, hall way and #1 bedroom. I ran upstairs and found that the radiator in #4 bedroom had burst. It was just as well that I was up early that morning since otherwise the water would have continued to pump out of the ruptured pipe much longer than it did, as it was it took far too long to isolate anyway since there were three valves to close off and I was only aware of two — bloody plumbers make modifications each time they work on the system without ever leaving us with an as built drawing or flow diagram!

Bringing home my baby

Each year a private plane has an annual inspection and it so happens that I have my Cesna C206 inspected and serviced at the end of October; this is in addition to having the plane serviced every 50 hours of air (flying) time. This is a good for me since I do not fly in the winter and the plane is ready when weather conditions have improved to the point that I consider it safe to fly, which is usually by the end of March.

As soon as the plane has been serviced I fly it back from Kamloops and put it in the hangar before there is snow on the runway, this year however I went to the UK November 2nd and did not get back to the ranch until the end of November – by then there was over four inches of snow on the runway!

Putting the outside into a room with no windows

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

The TV viewing room at Echo Valley Ranch & Spa had no windows which, at first, would seem like a disadvantage. Ursula Medley and her team of artist soon fixed that however by painting some scenes on the walls that brought the outside in. The outside at that time, that is, since it was back in 1992 when EVR was just a working cattle ranch with very few structures on the property other than the rancher’s cabin and essentials like hay barns, calving pens, etc.

The following photo’s show an over view of the room plus close ups of the mural on two of the walls. I guess from EVR’s point of view it is of historic value since there are none of the buildings that have since been constructed during the process of creating Echo Valley Ranch & Spa.
