Kids Weeks at EVR – Just a Bit of Fun =)

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

It started one week ago.  I will go on for another two weeks.  The Kids Weeks at Echo Valley Ranch keep everybody on the go.  With lots of fun and laughter, they are an adventure for kids and parents alike.

Echo Valley Ranch is usually a quiet place where our guests can forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  For three weeks in summer, however, everything is a bit different.  It is a little louder; the guests definitely run around a little more, and plenty of laughter and action going on.  The 2011 Kids Weeks at Echo Valley Ranch have begun and the kids are the center of attention.
Kids Weeks at EVR are anything but boring.  There are many activities for the little ones, with horseback riding at the top of the list, of course.  Whether in the form of riding lessons and pony games in the arena, or on a guided trail rides through the great outdoors with their breathtaking scenery, the kids will feel like little cowboys or cowgirls riding one of our 24 guest horses.

Scavenger hunts, badminton, barbeques and campfires
Apart from horseback riding, Taylor, our kids’ counsellor, has a great repertoire of kids’ games and activities ensuring that the parents will have some time to enjoy one of our great spa treatments, take a quiet walk, or simply relax as well.  One of the weekly kids’ activities is the EVR Scavenger Hunt, the perfect opportunity for the little ones to get to know the ranch and the other kids and do lots of running in the process.  Other options include volleyball, badminton, swimming or games in the pool, or playing Frisbee with the eight Border Collies.
The highlight of the week is the two barbeques and campfire nights.  The kids get to stay up a little longer, hang out with their new friends at the fire, make music, and roast marshmallows.
Whichever activities the kids like, one thing is for sure: they will go home with many new friends and great memories.  At Echo Valley Ranch, we are looking forward to spending another great week with our little guests.  Yihaaa!

Spotlighting Echo Valley Ranch and Spa

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

A picture is worth a thousand words.  This is why this June Echo Valley Ranch was the location of a three-day photo shoot with well-known photographer Martin Tessler.

It is obvious that a ranch has to be maintained well – inside and out.  Only through loving care and attention to detail will a beautiful ranch like ours become a true oasis of relaxation in the midst of nature, a place where people and animals alike feel at ease.  Those who have been to Echo Valley know that it is a truly beautiful place.  However, taking high-quality pictures of the ranch is very important to show future guests what they can expect when they come to stay with us.  This is why it was time to put the spotlight on Echo Valley Ranch again this June.

Thanks Martin Tessler
The photographer arrived with his assistant and a tremendous amount of equipment.  We were all very excited to see how Martin Tessler would set up for the photo shoot.  Not surprisingly, very little had to be changed or adjusted for the shoot.  Echo Valley Ranch was perfect the way it was.  However, the correct lighting was crucial.  But we were lucky: the sun was shining.  At least, for the most part…
Since Echo Valley Ranch and Spa is a classical Canada honeymoon destination, it was self-evident that we had to shoot some wedding pictures as well.  Overall, we had a great time and shared lots of laughs during those three days.

We were very happy to see that Martin Tessler applied his professional skills to make sure that Echo Valley Ranch looked as beautiful in the pictures as it does in real life.  Now we just have to wait patiently for the new pictures, which will appear on our web page for you to see very soon.  We can’t wait!

In Memoriam Chilco

Monday, June 20th, 2011

It happened a week ago.  A very sad day for all of us.  Chilco, one of our two beloved barn kittens, died.  We will never forget the courageous little guy.

It is evident at first sight: Echo Valley Ranch is a place of retreat and relaxation in the midst of Mother Nature.  However, it is all of the animals that are at the heart of EVR and make the Ranch what it is.  Horses, dogs, cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, falcons – and, of course, the cats.  Every animal is part of the EVR family and everybody who has met Norm and Nan knows how much they love all their animals.  For that reason, it was even sadder that one of our cute barn kittens died last week.  And we still don’t know why it happened…

Rainbow Bridge
Chilco and his sister Carrie-B came to Echo Valley Ranch at the beginning of last May at the age of five weeks.  Being separated from their mom at such an early age, the two kittens settled into their new home quickly and made many new friends.  Nan especially grew to love the two little ones.  She visited them often in the barn or introduced them to guests.  Quickly Chilco and Carrie became the new favourite guest attraction at EVR.  Unforgotten are the “trail rides” Chilco took together with his best friend Gem or his clumsy expeditions around the barn.

Every time an animal passes away, I like to think of the Rainbow Bridge metaphor – as well as the song of the same name by Kerry Muzzey.  At a certain place in eternity, you will find a place called Rainbow Bridge.  And Chilco is on his way to this place right now.

Hey Chilco, have fun in heaven with your energy and all your jokes.  We will always remember you!

Easter and Beyond …

Yo Yo master … soon to be Master of the Equine Field

Easter weekend was a wonderful time for us here at EVR. The weather performed its usual Cariboo Spring mixed bag with all forms of precipitation, and lots of sunshine in a timely fashion. As a result, everyone enjoyed all that EVR has to offer – inside and out.

Norm and Nan spent time with relatives, along with Brian and Dorothy and their family. We also had some special guests who shared various talents that only an eclectic bunch could provide. And Easter dinner … oh what a feast! Jason, our fabulous new chef, cooked up the most delicious fare that most of our mothers could not top! Two styles of turkey, and all the fixin’s fit for the royal family. So for a time, yes, we indulged like the Royal Family :)

Our new wranglers and hiking guides Sinja (Sam) and Sannukka indulged in our Canadian Easter; exploring differences in the international holiday from a German and Finnish perspective. I just love the international flare that is so vibrant here at EVR with all the influences – Western, Easterna and European. I believe that the Thai staff will have some German and Finnish phrases down by the end of the season.

One of Brian’s Gier falcons has laid three eggs … with one more on the way. Ritche is visiting and helping out, waiting patiently along with Brian and Dorothy for the rest of the clutches to hatch.

We are now at 8 calves, and perhaps one more will arrive tonight! We’ll see. The little ones are familiar with all the dogs and the grounds here as they wander about ‘out of bounds’ to explore and play with the dogs. I have discovered, on many occasions, late at night when I am checking on the cows that have yet to calve, that the collies enjoy sleeping wth them in the fresh, clean hay. It’s a sight to see – especially when they assume that they are supposed to keep them at bay, not snuggle up to them. I sense a little embarrassment on their parts, but I think that the smile on my face perhaps makes them realize that even in the animal world we are one big family.

As Easter is all about new life and new beginnings, we certainly don’t have any shortage of that theme here at EVR. New staff, horses, calves, facons … and who knows what else is in store. The excitement is just beginning  to flourish!

Julie was super happy to indulge in some turkey ... her favourite meal!

Spring Has Sprung!

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Spring is so exhilarating! Everything is new and happening … and at Echo Valley there are no exceptions!

We have been renovating and upgrading many things, and all the “old-timer” staff are so excited about the new staff arriving here, sharing their excitement for their new surroundings and impending work environment; the animals, the sights, the wilds of the Cariboo; the adventures and guests from Canada and abroad.

We have so many new creatures, of both the human and animal variety that it has created a new buzz around the ranch.

Along with our local “staff lore” comes the regular springtime expectations. New beginnings! So far we received two new horses, Lacey and the Red Rocket, (Rocky) both of whom we welcomed with a great deal of treats and a little bit of spoiling and grooming.

Brian’s falcons have laid many eggs and we will keep you in the loop  with the results as the hatching begins.

Our 11 new Black Angus heifers from last spring have begun their little maiden journey into adulthood, resulting in 7 new little calves at this point ,and more to come! The little monkeys have begun their barnyard shenanigans,  stirring up the collies, and keeping us on our toes so as to make me want to check every night for lost “puppies” ,so to speak. It’s a full time, 24 hour a day job to monitor cows calving until they are done. Horses are so much easier!!!

And last, but not least, the summer time sounds are back! The birds that parade on the nearby tree all summer long are singing their songs again, making me smile as I gaze up at that big, tall tree with a built in harmonious chorus. Our local owls are hooting and making their territorial calls … I am especially glad that they are here and keeping me company at night.

I kind of missed them all winter. Occasionally I would hear the faint and lonely call of an obscure owl, as though he was lost in our winter. But now the action is here and the sounds are profound and effective. I really sported a big smile on my face when I first heard that familiar sound. They’re back! Again!!!

I can’t wait for the momma bears and their cubs to show up in our upper pastures! They usually show up sometime around early May, and they mix in with the horses and cows like they grew up together. It’s a sight to remember. Who would have thought!

I have come across some cow moose in my travels, and the mountain sheep are rampant! Everywhere!

Well, since I have been away, and have rather neglected our blog, and keeping people truly updated; I just wanted to share some photos from before l left on my trip when we still had snow and winter was still wavering. A glorious full moon we had, and as I have said before … my simple camera does not do anything justice … You just have to come and see for yourself!

Full Moon Fever

The grounds were still snow covered during the last full moon, but today you would be hard pressed to find snow on most corners.
We just could not get enough of this illumination

Glorious skies

The first calve ... she is not what we imagined ... a different colour and all ... but she is our pride and joy and the leader of the pack ... "Norma" is her name.

This little guy had to be pulled ... he had just arrived at this point and was wondering what life was all about ... he is already into the shananigans with the others ...

They really learn how to make themselves comfortable and warm ... :)

Confidence

Norma and her surroundings ... our first Spring Hail

Sudden hail does not hinder the calve's rest

As weather changes rapidly here in the Spring; so do the levels of comfort among the newborns ... :)

We all have our moments :) ...

finger licken' good

Canada geese breaking the ice down on our ponds

We don't have to venture too far here at Echo valley to find an abundance of wildlife not seen on your everyday TV ... :)

A delight to watch on our afternoon venture

the last straglers

Hopefully we will start to see the new bear cubs in the pastures soon, and more ducks and geese in the ponds. We will catch up next week as Spring continues to awaken at Echo Valley.
