Almo, JoJo, Anna & Co.

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

They are fluffy. They are black and white and every guest falls right in love with them: the Border Collies at Echo Valley Ranch.  These eight cuddly fur balls are the EVR guardians and take their job as professional “guest companions” very seriously.

When guests arrive at Echo Valley Ranch, they can be sure of one thing: they will be greeted by their own personal, tail-wagging welcoming committee in the form of our eight ranch Border Collies. These dogs are a valuable ranch asset and it is hard to imagine the ranch without them. Furthermore, if you like dogs, you will love our happy group of eight. They have assumed the role of guest companions and will do their best to keep you entertained. They will come along for a walk, keep you safe on a hike, play Frisbee or fetch with you in front of the main lodge all afternoon long.

Not one like the other
Most of the time, it doesn’t take long for the guests at Echo Valley Ranch to remember all the names of the dogs: Almo, JoJo, Anna, Benji, Sage, Echo, Joy and Bessie. They might all look similar at first, but they all have different personalities. There is Almo, the leader of the pack. He is already 15 years old and is the sire of five of the younger dogs. At times it seems he is ready to retire but nevertheless he dutifully tries to come on every walk, also to watch what the youngsters are doing. There is also no mistaking half siblings’ JoJo and Anna. JoJo is 12 years old and has stopped following a strict diet and exercise regime years ago. Hence, he is the biggest one of the group and easily to distinguish. Anna is a little big-boned herself but the trait that makes it easy to pick her out of the group is her long and mostly white coat.  This leaves us with the five siblings that are, as mentioned above, Almo’s kids: Benji, Sage, Echo, Joy and Bessie – all of them three years old.
Let’s start with Benji. It is easy to find Benji since he always carries something around in his mouth. Mostly sticks, but sometimes it will be a tennis ball or a Frisbee. Frankly, he is obsessed with these objects and there is not much else that is worth his attention. Then, there is Sage. Sage is very handsome sporting one brown and one blue eye. He is also very talkative. If you ask him nicely, he will tell you one of his sad stories (“Awhoo”). Another one of the dogs is Echo, the most sensitive but also the politest one of the bunch. Unfortunately, he is the loser of the group and regarding the hierarchy, the last one in line. However, Echo is fast and an accomplished Frisbee player. Joy is one of the three girls of the gang.  She can be easily identified by guests due to the white spot on her back. Joy is very sensitive and loves to be cuddled.  Last but not least, there is Bessie, the smartest one of the bunch. She loves chasing horses and coming along on every hike – even all the way up to the top of Mount Bowman! Bessie is always along for the ride, especially, if there is something new to learn.

Well, now you know all about our beloved Border Collies. Come and meet them in person! Our regular and future guests can look forward to spending some quality time with them in the midst of nature at Echo Valley Ranch & Spa.

The Biggest Loser and his Friends

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Once they make it here, they stay with us forever: the horses at Echo Valley Ranch.  Every ranch animal has the right to live a long and healthy life – and thus also to die in dignity and at home.  This is Norm‘s and Nan‘s credo.  Our eight new horses thus, can look forward to a promising future.

Horses are the bedrock of Echo Valley Ranch and surely one of the reasons why many of our guests come back every year.  Sixteen reliable guest horses and nine retired horses plus one donkey make the ranch what it is: the ideal place to spend an outstanding family ranch vacation.  However, our horses are not getting any younger.  This is why we were thrilled to welcome some new horses at EVR this spring.

The Spring Newbies
The new horses could not be any more different: regarding their looks, ages, levels of training and characters.  They are not guest horses yet, but with a little more training, they all have that potential.  The wranglers at Echo Valley Ranch work hard to turn the newbies into reliable guest horses by training them and getting them acquainted with the trails.  Some of them will already be used for guest rides next season.  In all, eight new horses came to the ranch this spring.  Some of them arrived in April, the others in May.  They all are settling in nicely and are very happy with their new home.  Therefore, it is time to take a closer look at our new family members…

Biscuit (4th horse from the right)
The nine-year palomino is an eye catcher: he is tall and … well, fat.  However, here at Echo Valley Ranch, Biscuit follows a strict diet and exercise regime and has already lost a lot of weight.  One could say that he is Echo Valley’s very own “Biggest Loser“ and we are all very proud of him.  Another bonus point: Biscuit’s saddle fits him much better now!  In marked contrast to his weight, Biscuit is fast.  Super-fast even.  He loves to run and easily leaves all the other horses in the dust.  In addition, Biscuit comes from a working ranch and is already a professional so to speak.

Foxy
and Sassy (3th and 4th horse from the right)
The two cute Quarter Horse half-sisters are among the youngest horses on the ranch.  Both 6 years old, the sisters have come a long way in the recent months due to consistent training.  They will make great guest horses one day.

Lacy
(2nd horse from the left)
A nine-year old Clyde-cross mare, Lacy is well balanced.  She is reliable, a comfortable ride and is already used for guest rides this season.  Maybe not the prettiest among the new horses, but extremely lovable nonetheless.

Paris (3rd horse from the left)
The five-year old Appaloosa mare is the baby of the family.  Just like her name, Paris is very pretty but also somewhat of a diva.  She is, however, a comfortable ride and, with a little more experience, she will make a beautiful guest horse.

Monty (4th horse from the left)
The eight-year old Quarter Horse gelding came to the ranch together with Paris.  He is the most sensitive one among the newbies.  Once he has come to trust you, however, he is an excellent horse: well trained, fast and most of all very powerful.

Red Rocket (1st horse from the right)
The mama‘s boy among our horses.  Even though he is already eight years old, Rocky spent most of his life out in the field with his mom before coming to Echo Valley Ranch.  Being a big cuddly baby, he still has a lot to learn…

Tipi (1st horse from the left)
The seven-year old Appaloosa gelding is the jokester of the group.  We are not even sure that Tipi knows he is a horse.  Always in high spirits, he makes us laugh quite a lot and is always up to something.  With a little more training, he will soon make a fine guest horse.

At Echo Valley Ranch, we are already looking forward to next season when our guest will be able to try out all the new horses.  We hope that they will have as much fun with them out on the trail rides as we are having right now training them and showing them the ropes.

Summertimes

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Last week, we celebrated Canada Day.  This week summer arrived.  Finally.  Along with the arrival of summer, we welcomed two lovely new members on Echo Valley Ranch: barn kitten Clinton and a new calf.

Scratched up fingers.  Bloody hands.  Loud hissing.  And a lot of commotion in the box.  Somehow, we had imagined it differently – our first encounter with the new barn kitten Clinton.  After all, the little one is only four weeks old and fits into one hand.  Nobody would have thought of him as such a fighter since, with his red and fluffy coat, he is as cute as a button.  And, those big eyes.  Just like Puss in Boots from the movie Shrek.  However, looking at the little guy’s past, it becomes clear that we are the first people that he came in contact with.  Clinton was found on the street all by himself and without his mommy.

Now the little cat has settled into his new home and roams the barn.  Carrie-B is very happy to have found a new playmate as well after her brother Chilco died a couple weeks ago.  Sometimes, things do take a turn for the better – and we haven’t gotten any more scratches lately…

Canada Day at EVR
And so it happened that little Clinton spent his first Canada Day at Echo Valley.  We didn’t have our very own ranch parade, but we had lots of fun at the campfire.  A starlit night, guitar music and 27 guests ensured that nobody missed having a guest ranch parade.  The atmosphere and, of course, the food were yet again exceptional.  We had great guests including Norm’s daughters, who spend a few days with us at the ranch.  It was evident from the beginning that it would be a great campfire night and even the weather was good – sort of…

One more baby
By the way, little Clinton is not the only new ranch animal.  Last Sunday, a new calf was born.  It is a boy and he is healthy, strong, and full of energy.  And with him, the summer finally arrived.  It was about time.  We are already looking forward to more warm summer days, long trail rides, BBQ dinners, and campfire nights with our guests.  Let the summer begin.

Carrie-B is thrilled that she found a new friend in Clinton.

In Memoriam Chilco

Monday, June 20th, 2011

It happened a week ago.  A very sad day for all of us.  Chilco, one of our two beloved barn kittens, died.  We will never forget the courageous little guy.

It is evident at first sight: Echo Valley Ranch is a place of retreat and relaxation in the midst of Mother Nature.  However, it is all of the animals that are at the heart of EVR and make the Ranch what it is.  Horses, dogs, cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, falcons – and, of course, the cats.  Every animal is part of the EVR family and everybody who has met Norm and Nan knows how much they love all their animals.  For that reason, it was even sadder that one of our cute barn kittens died last week.  And we still don’t know why it happened…

Rainbow Bridge
Chilco and his sister Carrie-B came to Echo Valley Ranch at the beginning of last May at the age of five weeks.  Being separated from their mom at such an early age, the two kittens settled into their new home quickly and made many new friends.  Nan especially grew to love the two little ones.  She visited them often in the barn or introduced them to guests.  Quickly Chilco and Carrie became the new favourite guest attraction at EVR.  Unforgotten are the “trail rides” Chilco took together with his best friend Gem or his clumsy expeditions around the barn.

Every time an animal passes away, I like to think of the Rainbow Bridge metaphor – as well as the song of the same name by Kerry Muzzey.  At a certain place in eternity, you will find a place called Rainbow Bridge.  And Chilco is on his way to this place right now.

Hey Chilco, have fun in heaven with your energy and all your jokes.  We will always remember you!

About horses, birthday cake and good friends

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Twenty friends.  One birthday.  Having Echo Valley Ranch & Spa all to yourself for once.  All excellent ingredients for a perfect weekend.  And indeed, that’s what it was. All of the guests came to Echo Valley Ranch & Spa for one reason: To celebrate the birthday of their good friend Wendy.

Five horses, four cats, and two dogs:  these are the animals with whom Wendy shares her life – and she loves them all dearly.  The reason is obvious; animals are Wendy’s greatest passion.  And it has been that way for all her life.  In Wendy’s case, all her life means 70 years.  Quite a while or so it seems.  However, looking at Wendy it is hard to image that she has been around for such a long time.  She just does not look her age – seemingly unfair to some – definitely great for Wendy!
Moreover, an occasion like the 70th birthday needs an appropriate celebration.  Wendy and her husband Eric were of the same opinion, and so they invited 20 of Wendy’s good friends to spend the last weekend of May with them at Echo Valley Ranch & Spa.  Everything was about celebrating: dancing, laughing, horseback riding, hiking, spending quality time with friends, or simply taking some time to relax in the spa or outside in nature.  Wendy fully relied on Norm and Nan’s excellent hospitality to make her birthday weekend a special occasion.  She knew she could trust them because Wendy has been a guest at Echo Valley Ranch & Spa for many years, and became a dear friend to Norm and Nan during that time.

Where Did the Suitcase Go?
All of the guests including Wendy and her husband Eric arrived at EVR on Friday, the 28 May 2011.  Everything was perfect.  Or so it seemed…  It turned out that Wendy had forgotten to bring her suitcase.  The birthday girl without clothes?  Impossible!  As usual, Nan knew what to do.  Without further ado, the two raided Nan’s closet and found Wendy suitable birthday attire for her first evening at Echo Valley Ranch.  The suitcase made it to the ranch later that weekend – it was funny start to the festivities nevertheless.

The atmosphere during the weekend was inspiring, warm-hearted, and most of all cheerful – a party among true friends.  Always in the midst of it all was Belly, Wendy’s beloved dog.  It didn’t take long for her to win over the hearts of the other birthday guests as well.
During the day the guest were able to take advantage of all the great things Echo Valley Ranch has to offer.  They went horseback riding, hiking, biking, or simply read a book, spent some time outside with the many ranch animals, or enjoyed one of the great BC Spa treatments.

The Big Day
Chef Jason Folk attended to the guests’ culinary needs by preparing delicious meals that made mouths water.  In addition, the Thai crew outdid themselves once again, preparing an exceptional selection of dishes for the Thai night on Saturday evening.  It was quite a party on Saturday night: the guests were dancing to Thai and Canadian tunes and surprised Wendy by singing a special song for her.

Finally, it was Sunday, the 30 May, the big day: Wendy’s 70th birthday.  Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate, so the BBQ night had to take place inside.  However, that didn’t disturb the good mood at all and the birthday cake remained dry.
Overall, a perfect weekend with satisfied guests.  And hopefully a good reason for Wendy to think about spending her 80th birthday weekend at Echo Valley as well.  We are already looking forward to it!
